Design Justice
Sasha Costanza-Chock
How design can distribute benefits and harms unequally, and practices for designing with communities rather than for them.
About this book
The book presents design justice as a way of designing that marginalized communities lead, with the explicit aim of challenging structural inequality rather than reproducing it. It covers both the theory and the practice, and shows how design principles meant to be universal erase certain groups of people. Along the way it records many real community-led design efforts, each rooted in a specific social movement. It goes further than user-centered design, design for good or more diverse tech hiring, linking design to wider struggles for collective liberation and for ecological survival.
