About this book

Erika Hall gathers the research methods she trusts into a practical guide that teams can apply immediately, whatever their size or budget. Hall treats good research as asking sharper questions and weighing the answers critically, which saves a team time and money by shrinking what it doesn't know. Readers learn to find their competitive advantages, catch their own blind spots and biases, put findings to use, and see why focus groups should be avoided. The second edition adds a new chapter on surveys and updates examples across the book.

Where do you draw the line on "just enough"?

We ran three interviews for a pricing change and leadership called it anecdotal. How are you deciding when you have done enough to act?

Same here. We also estimate what being wrong would cost, which lands better with leadership than sample size ever did.

I tie it to the decision: if the next five interviews would not change what we build, we are done.

Stakeholder interviews before user interviews?

Hall treats stakeholder interviews as organizational research. Does anyone run them before every study, or only on new projects?
